Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion.
Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance and is widely performed in musical theatre. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, and is considered consider part of the Jazz tradition.
The sound is made by shoes that have a metal “tap” on the heel and toe. There are different brands of shoes which sometimes differ in the way they sound. Tap is as popular today as it was in the heyday of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.
Hot Shoe Shuffle, 42nd Street and Crazy For You, and the more recent Stomp and Tap Dogs, highlight the great diversities of style and music in tapping. Our students study examination syllabus work from International Dance Teacher’s Association, British Association of Teachers of Dancing and the Glenn Wood Tap, Australia and get the opportunity to sit examinations in all 3 exam boards at appropriate times through the year.
