We are very proud of our pre-school department at AAPA and it has been developed by our faculty over the last 11 years. We start all our little budding stars under the age of 3 years old in our specialist Mac the Monkey classes. The scientific evidence shows that there is an important link between the participation in an Early Years class in music and dance and the development of the child. Our classes enhance and develop the Social, Physical, Lingual, Intellectual, Creative, Emotional, Numeracy and early year’s Literacy skills of your child. By participation in our classes your child will grow in confidence and gain an enjoyment and appreciation of dance, music and drama at an early age giving an ideal head start to your little one.
Baby Mac Suitable for children aged 6 weeks old to walking
These classes provide a taster in Dance, Drama and Music. In today's world all these performing arts areas are interlinked and we have found that when young children are exposed to classes at an early age their confidence flourishes and social and learning skills develop quickly providing a great start to creating happy and healthy children. The brain of a baby develops the most in the first year of their life meaning that exposure to a variety of sensory activities is very important.
Our baby classes develop social, lingual, physical and rhythmical skills and with Mac's adventures each week stretch the imagination. Be prepared to Sing, Dance, Act, play musical instruments and much more… It is a great class to spend quality time with your baby.
We know how daunting it is to come to a class with a new born. After the class we get the kettle on and we offer tea, coffee, biscuits and a chance for your baby to play with other babies with some toys and the mummies/daddies/grannies/granddads to have a chat with each other. All our baby classes are friendly and supportive so you have nothing to worry about and everything to enjoy.
Once children have started to walk they will be ready to move onto to our older Little Performers Classes or our Little Gymnasts and Sports Classes.

Through Mac's weekly adventure children will learn the basics in Gymnastics and valuable skills that can be used in all sports, for example hand eye coordination, balance, agility, strength and flexibility. Alongside teaching basic vital sporting skills children will learn the importance of physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle and develop a zest for sport which we hope will last through until their adult life.
At Pre–School Level we run 2 levels of class: 18mths–3years which has Parent/Guardian participation so that the children progress with the comfort of a parent/guardian there and our 3-5 years which is parent/guardian free to allow the children to develop independently.
Our 3–5 years classes take part in our class assessments throughout their time at our Mac the Monkey Academy gaining bronze, silver and gold medals allowing the children to visualise and chart their progress.
Tap (from 3 yrs)
Our tiny baby tappers learn to stamp, toe tap, heel tap, skip, jump and shuffle ! We start at this stage to get the children used to working in noisy tap shoes. We teach numeracy skills when we teach the children how to count dance steps and count to music. Our pre-school tap classes are certainly the noisiest classes of the week!
Ballet (from 3 yrs)
Our baby Ballet stars learn to run, jump, skip and hop in our ballet classes. At this age we build up basic dance conditioning exercises at the start of class as we prepare the body for working. We add in elements of mime and improvisation to music to help the children express their selves through their dance and develop their creativity. Certainly one of our most popular classes of the week!
Modern-Jazz (from 4 yrs)
This class is ideal for a child who wants to have more freedom with dance and learn something funky. We start with basic stretching and conditioning for flexibility and strength and then move to dance steps such as isolations, step balchanges, kicks, turns and leaps. Our style in class ranges from modern to Jazz to funky pop giving our little ones a chance to dance and have fun.
Highland & Scottish National (from 4 yrs)
Come and learn our national style of dance. We teach the basic dance steps and elements required for the children to use in the Highland Fling and other dances. Alongside the dance steps we teach musical appreciation as the children learn to count and dance along to the Bagpipe and Scottish music we use in class. A great class to get your little one into – it will certainly keep them fit as they say dancing a 6 step fling is the equivalent to running a mile!
Street Dance (from 4 yrs)
We teach the basic dance steps of the 4 most popular styles of street dance – Hip Hop, Popping, Locking and Breaking. From this age we introduce freestyle and improvisation so that children can develop their own style and personality of their street moves. This enables children to perform in a Cypher in class and exams. Certainly our class of the week where the children can go wild becoming choreographers!
Mac the Monkey Stage Academy - from 4 years old
This is our younger version of our musical theatre class. The students take part in 30 minute classes in Singing, Acting, Jazz Dance and basic Acrobatic Gymnastics.
This class is a great one for the child which wants to learn a variety of techniques and perform. We encourage the children in this class to perform! It might be singing a solo song in class, perform in a mime with a partner or split into groups doing a small jazz combination or going across the mats doing a forward roll one at a time. Every time we have Trinity College London exams at AAPA we invite the younger students to perform for the examiner in a Young Performers exam with their Stage Academy Group.
